Weather conditions in recent weeks have created conditions conducive to wildfires. Nationwide, large-scale fires are burning simultaneously, placing a heavy strain on aerial and ground firefighting resources.
Therefore, given the severe risk of forest fires, a prefectural decree was signed on July 23, 2026, designating the department as a “red alert period” for the use of fire across all municipalities in the Hautes-Alpes department.
Pursuant to the Forest Code, this “red period” prohibits the use of fire in any form in heathlands, scrubland, forests, woodlands, plantations, reforestation areas, garrigue, and all surrounding land located within 200 meters of these areas, including the roads that cross them.
In the affected areas, the following are prohibited:
- the use of any type of fireworks;-
- the use of designated fire pits with built-in fireboxes;
- open-air grills, barbecues (except for fixed barbecues equipped with a chimney flue and complying with brush-clearing requirements), campfires, and bonfires;
- the burning of cut or standing vegetation;
- the burning of distillation straw;
- the use of any type of fire by property owners or authorized parties,
- smoking,
- hot work.
The provisions regarding the prohibition on the use of fire apply to the general public.
Individual responsibility and compliance with these provisions ensure public safety. Failure to comply with this prohibition is punishable by a fine of 135 euros.
Similarly, anyone who causes a fire is subject to the penalties provided for by applicable law.
